Do you keep your shoes on in your house or take them off? Scientists have recently examined the habit of keeping the shoes on.

Imagine yourself walking down the street, enjoying the sun and the cool breeze. Do you pay attention to the soil and leaves that your shoes touch? Of course not.

But, the truth is bacteria latch onto your shoes. Namely, your shoes are magnets for sources of Escherichia coli, like public bathroom floors, bird droppings, and dog waste, to name a few. Debris and leaves can also carry bacteria.

Researchers claim that your shoes have about 421,000 different kinds of bacteria. In case you keep your shoes on in your home, you actually transfer up to ninety-nine percent of these bacteria. This means that it is a lot of bacteria in your home simply from not taking your shoes off before entering your house.

What Is Escherichia Coli?

-E.coli is a bacterium, which normally lives in the intestines. But, certain kinds of E. coli can contribute to intestinal infection. You can get infected by swallowing a small amount of this bacterium.

This kind of intestinal infection can result in urinary tract infections, diarrhea, and intestinal problems. The most common symptoms include constant fatigue, nausea, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea (that may be bloody).

What Is Clostridium Difficile?

-A recent study in Houston, Texas has shown that your shoes could carry a harmful bacterium known as Clostridium difficile (C. difficile). It could cause life-threatening colon inflammation. Researchers previously believed that it could be caught in healthcare settings. However, it is actually far from the truth. When the researchers took 2539 samples, only 448 were found to be caught in healthcare settings.

The rest of the bacterium samples were caught on shoes from commercial stores, fast food restaurants, chain stores, and parks. What’s more, the researchers also found traces of this kind of bacterium in participants’ homes through their shoes. They found that about twenty-five of people’s shoes carried this kind of bacterium.

Around 500,000 Americans get sick from Clostridium difficile. Unfortunately, this type of infection is becoming harder to treat. Those suffering from the infection experience dehydration, rapid heart rate, fever, swollen abdomen, and pus or blood in the stool.

Visit your doctor in case you have 3 or more watery stools per day and your symptoms last more than 48 hours.
